When I went outside to check on my trays of California Goldfields and California Goldenrod wildflower seedlings this morning, one of them was overturned, and most of the soil and seedlings were dumped out. Noooooo! It was likely the family of raccoons who were visiting the yard last night.
I usually keep the trays covered with grating and secured with bricks at night, but I developed pneumonia last week and have been a little out of it the past few days.
So, while in my pajamas and enduring a racking cough, I spent an hour digging tiny holes around the yard this morning and placing baby seedlings in the ground, sometimes one by one.
Wildflower seedlings don’t generally like to be transplanted, but I did it last year not realizing that and actually had pretty decent results, so I’m hopeful.
It’s supposed to rain tonight, which could further add to their trauma and kill them but, hopefully, it will nourish and help them settle into their new spots. Fingers and toes crossed!
Most of them probably won’t make it, but I had to try. Poor little ones. I failed them!
